New Basketball Officials
2024 Classes for New Candidates
Athletic? Good people skills? Male or female older than 18 years. You control days and hours you can work. If this meets your criteria, than you can officiate high school girls' basketball. We will teach you, we will mentor you.
Classes will be held from 6:30 - 8:30 on Monday and Wednesday evenings, beginning on October 7th and ending on Nov. 6th. Additionally, the NYSGBOA New Candidates Test will take place on day Nov. 12th. Classes will be held in Room 108 in Notre Dame High School on Burrstone Rd. Please enter the front doors (facing Burrstone Rd.). If you have trouble finding us, call my cell.
On Monday, November 12th, at 6:00, you will be given the 50 question closed book New Candidates Test. A passing score is 86. If you receive a score of 80, 82, or 84 you will be allowed to officiate this year but will be required to take the test again next year and receive a score of 86 or better at that time. Candidates who score below 80 (very rare) will not be eligible to officiate. The classes on Nov. 7th will primarily focus on mechanics.
The class fee is payable by the third class (Oct. 14th). Upon successful completion of the test, you will need to pay Board dues for the year (new officials have a reduced dues to offset the cost of the class). You will also incur other start-up expenses, primarily for uniforms. All officials in New York State are required to have a fingerprinting clearance. If you have not already been cleared due to your employment or officiating other sports, this is another initial expense but you can submit a claim for reimbursement from Section 3 Athletics. It sometimes takes much longer than anticipated for the fingerprinting results to be received, so if you have not previously been cleared you may want to begin the process even before the classes begin. If you need more info, let me know. You will not be allowed to officiate until you are cleared. On the positive side of the ledger, you will be earning $88.75 for each game you work.
Our Board has 4 meetings that you will need to attend at Notre Dame High School or the New Hartford American Legion. Typically, there is one in November, December, January and February on Sundays at 6:00.
I look forward to seeing you at our classes. Thank you for your interest.
